Push Yourself!

In my previous posts, I talked about human traits, investing in people, and investing all you can into your place of employment.  This post is somewhat related to all three of those topics.  I wanted to write about a concept that I’m truly passion about.  This is something that I have consistently excelled at my entire life, and at the same time, have consistently failed at my entire life.  I’m referring to the concept of pushing yourself to the fullest extent.

In life, from a very early age, we’re taught to “try our best.”  “All you can do is try your best.”  “As long as you try your best, you have nothing to be ashamed of.”  “Just do your best and you’ll be alright!”  Have you ever heard those phrases before?  Maybe several times throughout your life?  Maybe twice per day from teachers, coaches, parents, close friends, or colleagues?

In my opinion, I think the concept of just “doing your best” is good when talking to a young child.  As we get older, however, I think we should really analyze what our “best” really is.  It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to lose weight, get into a good college, score a promotion, impress a hot date, or grow bigger biceps;  we should all be striving to become better.

I think that there are certain time periods and certain activities where we can say that we gave a reasonable, best effort, or even our absolute best effort.  I’m definitely not questioning that.  We, however, as a society should really strive to push the boundaries of what our “best” really is.  I think many of us, myself included, think we’re doing our best, when in reality we could have achieved so much more.  Many times we think we did our best, but in reality, we actually settled for mediocrity.

I truly believe that we should all create more of an effort to self-analyze what we could have done better in every aspect of our lives.  We need to constantly push ourselves and when we think we did our best, we should fabricate ways to take our “best” to the next level.

What do you think?  Is there a part of you that thinks you’re already the best?  Is there a part of you that sometimes wants to say you did your best in order to justify any areas where you could have performed better?  Regardless of how you feel, I know that I could always become better.  I know that I could always push myself.  Can you push yourself?

Investing all you can in the Workplace!

John F. Kennedy (JFK) once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”  That is by far one of the most well known quotes by any president in United States history.  There is certainly much deeper meaning though behind this quote.  And it’s certainly not just applicable to serving one’s country.  It’s applicable to ANYTHING in life.

The quote, if you were to extrapolate into a much much deeper level, essentially means being more self-sacrificing, serving, giving, and caring.  It’s basically saying “ask not what you can get, but what you can give.”  Although this can be applied to any field or endeavor, I’d like to focus on the workplace, since we were just talking about workplace safety in our last post.  A lot of people complain about their work.  They complain about their pay, they complain about their hours, they complain about their coworkers, they complain about their boss, they complain about their working conditions, etc. etc. etc.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I believe any good, ethical employer would provide their employees with a fun, safe, rewarding, comfortable, and well-paying environment like we stated in the previous post; however, I believe a lot of times our problems lie not in our place of employment, but rather our own negative attitudes toward our work environment.  In our work we many times look at the negatives and because negativity influences our emotions sometimes a lot more fiercely and frequently than positive emotions, we start to associate work with nothing but negative.

But, honestly, who are we to really judge?  Do we forget that we CHOSE to accept that job?  That we CHOOSE to go to work every day?  Do we forget that our employer is the one writing our paychecks, which essentially helps us feed ourselves and our family?  If we truly hate our job that much, do we not have the CHOICE to just get up and QUIT!??

Workplace and Giving Your all

I think that it’s worth it for any professional, young or old, to take some time every day to be grateful for their employer.  We should be grateful that we have a job.  We should be grateful that we have some people to talk to at work.  We should be grateful for the resume builder that we’re continuously embellishing through new skills and experiences that we gain every day.

Whether you’re working at a foul smelling chemical plant, a manufacturer based in the UK, a loud call center, a prestigious doctor’s office, or the White House, it could be worth your while to count all the positives about your job and just give thanks.  If we’re getting paid to show up to our place of work, we should have the responsible mindset of always giving our all.  Even if it’s a temporary job or far from our dream career, we should have an attitude of giving our best because every action we take is a representation of who we are.  Ask not what your workplace can do for you, ask what you can do for your workplace!


Investing in people


The convenience of amenities around the workplace is not something all workers have. Chances are if you work in a plant, you would be located in an industrial area with no banks, post office or shops, plus you would be working in shifts which means going to where café’s are located is restricted to when you are on a shift that coincides with standard business opening times.

So what do employees do when they need to get lunch or run other errands? They either go to where shops are located, come with their own food, hold off on running errands during their shift or take time off to get things done.

So what can employers do in situations like this, to help ease the pressure of restricting all personal tasks being done by having to drive, find somewhere to park, get seen/served and get back to work all within their lunch break? Well they can listen and take action.

For instance, employees in a plant complained about the time it takes to get to their cars in the parking lot, travel to a lunch spot, and return within their lunch hour. This was an issue faced by many people at the plant, so a group of long time workers were asked to offer solutions in consultation with other employees.

The result was the creation of two outside and one inside lunch area, and for mobile vendors to park outside the doors during all three shifts to purchase food and drinks.

There are other examples of employers and employees collaborating to come up with solutions to make the work environment more pleasant, particularly as most employees are usually excited to be asked for solutions as they take pride in their accomplishments and it adds to the benefits of working for these type of open organisations.

Other accomplishments by workers along with lunch areas and mobile vendors include, the introduction of a day care for all shifts, the conversion of a break room to a company wide exercise facility with showers, which promotes better fitness levels for all and reduces the intake of fat burners as a means to reduce fat that accumulate in the body.

There is also a mentoring program run by employees with over 10 years experience for new company team members and there is a voluntary skill sharing education program, where free computer training to employees and family members on site are given. This allows workers to learn skills to perform jobs that can be done online and program has been added where employees can perform data entry jobs and earn a computer of their own.

This all leads to a happier work environment, increased productivity and a sense of belonging. These additional benefits become more alluring than cash and employers realise that by listening and taking action employees are more productive and are less lively to leave, which lowers staff turnover.

Get to know the people you strive to lead. Find out what is important in their lives. Relationships and recognition will always be the foundation of motivation. Invest your time and effort to learn more from those around you. This is where you will find your best return.

Nature vs nurture

What are traits?

Traits are certain characteristics we have that make up specific physical qualities. These are traits we inherit from family members. There are also personality and behaviour traits which determine how we react to situations, these are the ones that create lots of debate amongst people as it leads to the question of nature vs. nurture.

Inherited or acquires – nature vs. nurture

Is our personality and behaviour part of our genetic make up or are they traits we acquire from people who have a high influence in our lives, such as parents, teachers, friends, pop stars and from others we meet through out our lives.

Do these traits stay static or do they change through time as we learn and experience more?

Acquired traits indicate environmental factors have shaped how we have developed, the type of situations we have faced or circumstances we have had to overcome. These are factors that have made us acquire and not only take specific traits, but also determine how we conduct ourselves in situations we find ourselves in.

There are certain personality and behaviour traits we think are inherited and the easiest way to observe this is by looking at a set of it wins. They will look alike with similar features and have certain behaviour patterns they share. But do they share these patterns because they have been brought up in the same environment or because they have inherited them? Are their personalities similar to that of other family members or a factor of how they have been raised?

Who can give us the answer

Behavioural genetics is a field of study that looks into the role our environment and genetics plays in shaping our behaviour. It draws information from various other fields such as biology, psychology, genetics, statistics, ethology and epigenetics.

Of the 3 types of traits – physical, personality and behaviour – physical traits are unquestionable inherited. We are born with certain features that can’t be changed, yes we can mask them or disguise them, but they would always be underneath.

Contact lenses can be used to change the colour of our eyes, but the original colour would always be there, we can dye or bleach our hair, but the new growth would always come through the roots, we can cover freckles with make up and we can workout to get leaner muscles through regular exercise with the help of a supplement like a hydrolyzed protein powder read a review on this type of protein powder at We can do all of this, but it only masks what we can’t change.

Personality and behavioural traits on the other hand is something we cannot only mask, but can change. Take anger as an example, is it a trait that has been acquired or one that has been inherited? Do we just mask these emotions like we do the physical traits mentioned earlier or can we change the way we respond in situations that bring out that anger? The same question can be asked about sadness and happiness. Are we susceptible to these through our genes or our environment?

Anger, sadness and happiness are emotions we encounter and are sometimes required to mask. In trying to do this, it may feel like we are going against the grain, but it can be done through observation, perseverance and repetition.

So far, no one has been able to convince us all on the nature vs. nurture question. There is definitely a lot that can be put down to nature which is then moulded further by our environment.

The debate will continue for a long time to come.
